This is the improved eGo 500GB USB drive

Iomega's eGo 500GB portable USB HDD has been redesigned. When you purchase, make sure you are buying the new version.

I bought this portable HDD specifically to back up my iTunes directory, which is approaching 300GB. I also own another Iomega 500 GB portable HDD, and when I ordered this one I thought I was getting another identical unit. This one has been updated, and apparently for the better. This one is shaped like a slightly large deck of cards rather than as a whiskey flask configuration like the older model. It also has nice little rubber feet. But the big improvement seems to be that it is somewhat thriftier regarding whether it could draw sufficient power from the USB ports. This unit easily functioned in one of my computers in which the USB port was insufficient to power the earlier model. I do not know if this is a quirk or whether Iomega improved the design.

Further substantiating the theory that this unit is redesigned to be more power-efficient is the fact that it runs much cooler than my earlier model. I mean hugely cooler. I have moved about 400GB of data onto this unit, and it is barely warm above room temperature. Hard to believe that this does not represent a significantly better re-engineering of the drive.

Installation could not have been easier--there wasn't any. The unit came pre-formatted for NTFS and I simply plugged it into my Windows 7 machine and it was immediately recognized. I renamed the unit "Red Bounty" by right-clicking "properties" and within 30 seconds I was backing up iTunes.

Highly recommended.
Nice Hard Drive

I needed an extension to my storing abilities and thought I would try this iomega product. Works as advertised, very easy to setup - no power cable and that helps. The back of my computer is spaghetti junction anyway so I liked the single cord. Nice and small drive as well that does not get hot enough to fry eggs on - also a plus. Hopefully it will last for a few years. Seems as if you need to put all of your data on some sort of "hard copy" anyway - hard drives can die. But this makes access waaaayyy easier. Overall very pleased with this product.
Amazing Product

This thing is freaking sweet. 500gb is more than what's on my hard drive so I can transport anything I want easy. It transfers fast enough that I don't even notice. I even installed some games on it and play them off of it. I can't even tell it's coming from there. Makes a very soft humming sound that almost anything will drown out. I dropped it accidentally a few times and it still works beautifully. Highly recommended for any klutzy geek like me who needs space for their stuff but needs protection for it.
Sleek, quiet, and oh-so-portable

Weighing in at 6 ounces and with dimensions just 3.5" by 5.5" x .75", this snazzy little portable hard drive is the perfect size to slip into a briefcase or store in a drawer. Its 320 GB of storage is about what you would expect in a 2009-introduced portable. And who would have thought that eye-catching colored electronics would pop up in the workhorses of the computing world? I love it.

The disk runs smoothly, with only a whisper of sound, something I really appreciate since I have a relatively noisy Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 1 TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive WDH1U10000N hooked up to my desktop. For PC users, it is plug-and-use; Mac owners must reformat the drive using Disk Utility, a process described clearly in the manual. The eGo is powered by a dual (split) USB connector, so you must have two slots open side-by-side. Of course, the upside is that you don't need an outlet to transfer files. (Update: I can use one USB port when connected to my Mac Mini, but my MacBook requires both when running on battery power. See comments.)

The manufacturer claims that this can be dropped four feet and survive intact, but there's no way I'm going to test that. Still, its aluminum case feels sturdy, giving me confidence that the eGo can withstand some bumping around. The tiny silicon feet (it lies flat, not on end as some do) prevent accidental sweeping off a desk or table. The three-year warranty suggests that Iomega has complete confidence in the integrity of its product.

With the purchase of this product, Iomega offers a "protection suite": six months of McAfee VirusScan Plus (Windows only), MozyHome Online Back-Up (with 2 GB storage free), EMC Retrospect Express (Mac and PC), and Iomega QuickProtect (both platforms). As a Mac user, I have little interest in any of the preceding since I use Time Machine for back-ups and since I don't want anyone storing my information online. Despite the fact that I don't want the software, I appreciate that Iomega has included it for others who may.

Use this for file backups or storage of memory-intensive media. If you need an external hard drive for a desk top, you'll probably want one with a larger capacity, but the eGo is perfect for laptop use, travel, and as a supplemental storage device.
I dont know why I waited so long to get one?

This external hard drive is excellent; I can copy material from home and transfer the material/pictures to my PC at work. It works great I had a stick drive 2gIG it just got me mad because of never enough room. I literally removed all my files from my 80Gig hard drive in my PC and now are carrying them with me. Great product just plug n play. And it looks cool when you get it out at someones house to show your pictures.
